Merry Christmas!

Sydney International Airport

Sydney International Airport

Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas. We had a fantastic Christmas dinner at McDonald's in the Sydney Airport. After nine straight months in Papua New Guinea, one of the last countries in the the world without a McDonald's, I am sure my body will reject its salty goodness and go into shock. Until that happens we are excited and looking forward to next few weeks exploring southern Australia. Watch for updates.

Happy Holidays!

One Year in Port Moresby!

Hello Everyone,

Monday, September 12th marked our one year anniversary in Port Moresby. I stopped to look back and see where we have been and what we have done in the last year. Unfortunately, travel in Papua New Guinea is expensive, difficult and very little in the way of tourist infrastructure. This doesn’t lend to great travel with a 3 and 10 year old. While we have been able to do quite a bit locally here in Port Moresby, the majority of our adventures have been outside of PNG. Without further delay here is a quick list of our travels for the last year...

Places We Have Visited

  • Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea
  • Tokyo, Japan
  • Nagano, Japan
  • Cairns, Australia
  • Singapore
  • North Island, New Zealand
  • Auckland, New Zealand
  • Wellington, New Zealand

Things We Have Done and Seen

  • Giant Fruit Bats of PNG
  • Tree Kangaroos of PNG
  • New Years Eve in Tokyo
  • Meiji Jingo Temple in Tokyo
  • Disneyland Tokyo
  • DisneySea Tokyo
  • Rode the Bullet Train to Nagano
  • Snow Monkeys in Nagano
  • Snorkeled the Great Barrier Reef
  • Australian Aboriginal Cultural Show in Australia
  • Zach Sheared a Sheep in NZ
  • Dug Our Own “Hot Tub” at Hot Water Beach in NZ
  • Hobbiton Movie Set in NZ
  • Stayed at the base of “Mount Doom” in NZ
  • Weta Workshop Movie Studios in Wellington, NZ
  • Maori Cultural Show in NZ
  • Countless Geothermal Features in NZ

What’s Coming Up in the Next Year?

We are planning a trip to Australia at the end of the year. We plan on spending New Years in Sydney and then venturing out to explore more of the southern Aussie coast.

In addition, Embassy Port Moresby was recently granted an additional R&R given its status as a hardship posting. This gives us another trip we didn’t expect. We haven’t decided yet but Thailand looks high on the list at the moment. We will let you know.

Rare Travel Find

I recently took a trip to Honiara, Solomon Islands on embassy business. HIR is an extremely small airport with virtually no amenities, i.e. no air conditioning or bar or restaurant. You just sit and sweat and wait for your flight and sweat some more.

Anyway, I now expect something unexpected each time I fly to Honiara. Last time I had a flight canceled and had to layover in a "questionable" hotel provided by the airline until I could get out the next day. On this last trip the ticketing system was down when I went to depart. The result was I was given a handwritten boarding pass. I have never seen one of these in the wild before. Is this even legal?!?
